 Thanks for the comments.  I enquired about some secondhand extension 
tubes today but they had been sold and the shop had forgotten to 
remove them from the database.  I'm not worried though... most of my 
subjects are distant enough that I won't require tubes.

 BTW if you're looking at a 300mm f/4 you'll have to get the newer ED 
IF one if you're looking for head & shoulders portraits.  This is not 
a cheap lens :)  Plus I find the 300 f/4 difficult at times to 
critically focus.
