If you're looking for a good reference on alpha channel masking, I _highly_ recommend picking up Photoshop Masking & Compositing 2nd Edition, Katrin Eismann. Worth every penny.
I have no experience with Lobster; hadn't even heard of it previously. But some of the claims seem dubious. This claim for example: "changes can be safely and accurately made to your Luminosity layer without affecting the Hue and Saturation of your file - an action not possible in Photoshop." The existing Photoshop Lab mode allows this with ease. There may be some value to this thing, but it's not at all obvious.
