FWIW, I've been using a first generation Drobo pretty much since they became
available. Other than being really, really slow (I think it is USB 1), it's
been a perfectly reliable performer. Right now I have 3x2T drives in it, as I
had out grown the 750GB drives that I put in originally.

i was always cautious of the Drobos but when i found a used 2nd gen Drobo (FireWire/USB2) with 2TB (effective) of storage installed for $200 i went for it (after vetting the seller); it has been working fine for 18 months as secondary storage, but i haven't yet needed to replace drives; it is not super fast, but it's been quiet and trouble free

that said, if i could afford it (and especially if i needed 8TB) i'd prefer a solid a 4-bay NAS on the level of the Synology, Qnap, etc. (beware, researching these is a black hole for time)
