Thanks, Franks and John, for your comments.

This is at an environmental education center. They are trying to make
a point (and using tobacco money to preach). This place is located
in my county, and the county recycling lets us put all recyclables in
one container for curbside pick-up every other week.

John, do you have Freecycle where you are? It's a good way to get rid
of things you no longer use. www.freecycle.org/

Looks like the nearest one is about 30 miles away in Durham, NC.

I really haven't had any problem with reuse/recycle except for the
Styrofoam.

Goodwill will take just about everything reusable I want to get rid of.

We have the single stream curbside recycling here in Raleigh, but they
won't take the Styrofoam. They'll dump it back in your yard if you put
it in the recycle bin.

And if they find it in the solid waste bin, they just leave the bin
sitting on the curb without emptying it. Between Goodwill, recycling &
composting I only generate enough solid waste to put the bin out about
every 3rd week.

The single stream curbside recycling won't take computer parts either,
but Wake County has a computer recycling drop off site.

I've been thinking a bit about recycling lately.

Mainly because I'm doing a fair amount as I try to de-clutter this
house. If I can't use it, it goes to Goodwill for someone who can. If it
can't go to Goodwill, it goes to recycling ... or compost.

Only if there's no other way to reuse/recycle does it go into the trash.

I've been recycling a lot of cardboard. I still had almost every
shipping carton that any appliance, computer, TV, stereo component,
monitor ... was packed in. Kept them in case I had to ship something
back for repair. Well, nobody repairs anything any more so, I've been
emptying them out, flattening them and getting them off to the recycle
center.

I've still got one problem. STYROFOAM - all the peanuts & packing inserts.

There is no recycling for Styrofoam. The nearest place that accepts
Styrofoam for recycling is 180 miles away in Hickory, NC.

Man, garbage is getting more and more complicated every day!

;-)

Toronto now has single stream recycling. All the stuff is sorted at
the recycling facility into paper and metal. Makes life (and
recycling) a bit easier.

Fun shot (with serious overtones).

cheers,
frank
