Yes, that was the point... to keep you guessing :)

Now that I've arrived home I can explain further. Yesterday I completed the
Lake Wanaka Half, which is half of Challenge Wanaka. It's part of the
Challenge Family of events which is a rival to Ironman. Same distances but run
by different people.

The three numbers on the back of my finishers shirt are the lengths of the
swim, bike and run sections respectively, in kilometres, for the half-distance
race.

The race is held in the small resort town of Wanaka here in NZ, about 6 hours
south from where I live. It's marketed as the world's most scenic
long-distance triathlon and it really is stunning there. It also happens to be
one of the hardest long-distance courses in the world... and the past few years
have been hot & windy so it's getting a bit of a reputation.

The swim was very close to being moved to plan B due to both the low
temperature of the lake (15C) and the wind-induced choppiness of the water (I'm
guessing about 1.5 to 2 foot waves). That resulted in it being one of the most
intense experiences of my life and it took a lot of fortitude to keep myself
from withdrawing early on.

The bike leg went very well - the wind was pretty strong in places but didn't
really cause problems for me. I blew up about 3 or 4km into the run but I
stubbornly kept plodding along, still running as I'd have felt disappointed
about walking... even though I was running at about walking pace :)

In the end my total time was 7 hours 11 minutes, and if I'd been able to hold a
reasonable pace in the run it could have been more like 6:20. But that comes
down to my buildup being marred by an injury early on so I'm not bothered. I
wanted to complete, not compete.

I'll see if I can post some pics during the next few days.

Cheers,
Dave
