The FA lenses also tell the body to what distance they are focused.  Perhaps 
his lenses are at infinity?

The FA lens supplies more information to the camera and allows dynamic shutter 
speed adjustment when using flash. A series and earlier don't supply such 
niceties, and so the feature is disabled.
I suspect Pentax could enable it if they desired, the A lens does transmit 
aperture, which is all that should be required, but they want to sell new 
lenses, and so disable some features.
