Couple of notes: - if you have a bunch of Virtual Copies in your "originals" set, you'll create exports for all of them and the originals too using this method exactly as stated. There are several ways to eliminate this side effect, but I'll leave them as an exercise for the reader. ;-)
- you don't have to tell the export function to add the exports back to the catalog. I do that for proofing. If you don't, all you have to do to eliminate the masters is delete them to the trash, quit, and delete the catalog and previews files. The exports will be left behind.
