I think I solved it. I have a factory calibrated Dell monitor which I had set to AdobeRGB. In Windows I had set a special profile supplied by Dell as default. Switched everything (monitor and Windows) back to sRGB and now both images and LR are equal.
The Dell AdobeRGB profile is the prime suspect.
