For those interested, a great read with these kind of tidbits is "Go Like
Hell" by A.J. Baime covering the Ford Ferrari battle at LeMans.

Great story, Paul! And by that I mean the actual events and your
rendition.
That car is a treasure.
Always loved the they had to build a bump in the roof to accommodate
Gurney's lanky frame.
Sort of like a Cotty bump. I was wondering if someone was going to point
that out. Lots of stories associated with this car. At the time, the press
pundits assumed that Foyt and Gurney, who were competitors, would be so
involved in bettering each other that they would kill the car before
nightfall. They were wrong of course, and both drove with an eye on
finishing. At one point during the night Scarfiotti in the second place
Ferrari 330 P4, who was four laps down, pulled up behind Gurney and
flashed his bright lights as though he wanted to pass. Gurney slowed a bit
to let him by, but the Italian continued to flash his lights. So Gurney
pulled to the side of the road and parked. Scarfiotti pulled in behind
him. Then realizing the futility of the exercise, Scarfiotti drove back
out onto the racetrack. Gurney did likewise and followed him to the
finish, still more than 30 miles ahead of the Ferrari he was following.

I had some fun yesterday writing a piece for The Times about the Ford
Mark IV GT40 that won the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans in what amounted to a
cakewalk. That win has to be considered one of the most significant of
all time for an American race car. The occasion that inspired an article
was some maintenance work on the car, which belongs to The Henry Ford
Museum. My article is here:

The Times only used one photo. (They were overwhelmed with other work and
might add more later). So for the PDML, I posted the other pics that I
got from The Henry Ford here:
