That Lr mask pinhole effect is often present in surfaces that aren't
fairly uniform. Between the pinholes and poorly defined edges I've
just given up attempting to use the auto-mask feature. I always use
the mask with the flow set down to about 20, adjust the feathering and
size to suit the geometry of the work area, then brush multiple
strokes to build-up the mask. Generally I work with feathering at 100
and avoid getting too close to the edge of the object. In most images
where you are keeping the effect subtle, the mask doesn't need to be
perfectly accurate.

If I need a precise mask, like a for cutout, I use Photoshop tools. Lr
just won't cut it. (har)
