For some people, hate is a very strong and destructive emotion. For others, not so much. There are two problems with hatred, one is when it is used to harm people through inciting others to do harm (this is the neo nazi style of hatred), and for me, the other is when it is used as an excuse to stifle freedom of speech.

Hate speech: I hate broccoli
Hate speech inciting others to do harm: I hate broccoli and we should kill all the broccoli farmers.

It can be a pretty hazy line, but in principle, I support your right to broadcast your hatred of broccoli, but not your right to incite others to do harm to people who chose to grow the stuff.

We had a Holocaust denier in Canada a number of years ago, who was little more than a whack job conspiracy theorist. Our government crafted a whole bunch of laws to shut the guy down with. I don't think any of his rants involved "we should gas more Jews", or words to that effect. All of his rants surrounded the holocaust never happened. But, our government decided that what he was doing was hate speech, and he was shut down, and IIRC, chased out of the country.
