Brackets (parentheses) are only normally used in complex algebraic equations although they may be used as a teaching aid in simple algebraic & arithmetic equations. All you have to remember is that multiplication & division are performed before addition & subtraction and you can't go wrong. Easy Peasy. Common (or vulgar (from Latin vulgaris = common)) fractions consist of a numerator over a denominator. If the numerator is larger than the denominator it is a proper fraction wheras if the numerator is larger than the denominator it is an improper fraction. The problem today is that basic mathematical principle are no longer reinforced in school programmmes (like times tables) and calculators are used even for the most basic calculations. What ever happened to mental arithmetic? How many photographers can still mentally apply the Sunny 16 rule?

That's a bit misleading since the 9/5 is a fraction, not two whole numbers.

Just out of curiosity, what real life problem does that equation relate to?

It's been long enough since I'd done school-book math that I had to
Google "order of operations" to be sure I got the answer right.

Not trying to harp on but given the results from that thread most
people couldn't even manage a simple temperature conversion ie:

F = 32 + 9 / 5 x C
