My father was in charge of security at one of the RAF bases where he was stationed for a while and had to call in the bomb squad once for a bag of laundry that someone had left at the gates. You don't know it's harmless until someone, or a robot, has actually checked it, and sometimes it's best just to blow the damned thing up. Saves on laundry bills too. During the Cold War he was also once asked to look after the visit of some Soviet inspectors looking for undeclared nukes. His responsibilities included choosing the menu.
