It does have a center post, so I guess I could  try that. (It's not the 
greatest tripod in the world, it's  adequate.)

On sharpness: your ISO and aperture are probably optimal,  depending on
the lens of course. How solid is your tripod? Have you hung a  weight
from it to stabilize it more? A cotton bag with a few nearby rocks  in
it might help.
