Thanks for all the responses, I have put them in chronological order below
in this mail.
(My response is slow because I traveled this weekend from Holland to
Switzerland to play a day with my grandchildren, tomorrow (Monday) I'll be
driving back again)
My way of working now is to write the correct lens name manually in
Lightroom in the "creator" field. This is quite fast as it can be done in
batches
For my lenses without ID (K-lenses and 50mm macro ring) this will always
be manual of course. If, for lenses with ID, it can be automated at import
or afterwards that would be great!
I will see how far I come and probably will ask your help, Gerrit, off
line as you offered.
I think I will be happier if all can be handled in LR and not in another
program like Photome.....
Greetz, Jos

Gerrit:
Have you checked with something such as Exif tool? If the info shows there
and not LR, then you might have to use a hex editor to modify cameraraw.dll
to 'add' the lens. I had to do that for my Sigma 18-250 HSM lens. Also had
to add a lens profile to Camera Raw.
---------
David Parsons:
IIRC, the 8 and 9 mm issue is a camera limitation, but the lens not
being recognized is a Lightroom problem.
Firmware may be updated to show the correct focal length, but who know
when that will be, it's been an issue for a couple of years.

Lightroom will probably correct itself on the next point release (if
there is one before LR5 is released).

John Francis:
It won't be a camera problem; the camera doesn't do anything with
the lens ID it receives except stuff it into the image EXIF data.

Sigma in the past were notorious for not actually accquiring a
real lens ID code from Pentax, but just masquerading as something
else with approximately the same focal length/aperture, etc.

If they have stopped doing this, and have a unique code for this
lens, then I'd expect the next Lightroom update to recognise the
code and know all about the lens; Adobe will get the information
from Pentax. If Sigma are still playing silly games, though, it's
anybody's guess when (if ever) Lightroom will know what to display.

Rob Studdert:
All my new Sigma lenses appear to provide a unique code, I have
written them into PhotoMe

Gerrit:
Hoi Jos
I would be willing to help offline with the Camera Raw dll. I will need the
lens ID for each and some other info like the lens name. You might get lucky
and the lens profile exists in LR already, even if LR/Camera Raw don't
recognize the lens. That was/is the situation with my Sigma 18-250 HSM, even
after Adobe twice said they added the lens in updates.
We can even do it in Dutch if you prefer
-------
Gerrit:
Hoi Jos
In CameraRaw.dll there is a code 3 44 which maps to Sigma or Tamron Lens. If
your lenses have unique id codes, then you can modify the dll to give them
specific names. If they all use 3 44, then no
E.g. my Sigma 18-250 uses 8 8, not used by other lenses. So I overwrote a
lens I will never own with the correct text string and set it to 8 8.
Presto, my lens is recognized when importing photos.
-------
P.Alling:
It's a lens problem. IIRC Sig[nificant} Ma[lfunctions] does not license
lens data from any manufacture and reverse engineers everything so there
are often conflicts between firmware in later Non Sigma cameras and
earlier Sigma lenses. I think sigma offers an update service, but I could
be wrong about that. These problems used to be so prevalent that there
was a web site dedicated to them, it was sometimes fun to read, but seems
to have disappeared a few years ago. I haven't cared enough to see if it
was saved by the Wayback Machine.
