Esc should work in any browser / OS. I'm a Flickr user and I agree that the new image viewing UI "has issues" (sucks). You're supposed to click the non-obvious X in the upper-right corner of the viewer when you want to leave "view single image" mode. If instead you happen to click on the image itself it goes into auto-fullscreen-slideshow mode. This navigation breaks all the user expectations and is confusing.
