That's not such a bad thing.  I read a news article recently about a couple who 
were burgled.  They kept their backup drive next to their laptop so both were 
pinched together and they've lost all of their digital photos.

If it's going to be a spinning disk I'd suggest USB3.  I'm pulling this out of 
my arse but I doubt you'd get any speed improvement for the extra money if you 
used Thunderbolt or Firewire.
