I meant not conveniently accessed as in they are not sorted out 
in the same way as in lightroom. Most of my disks are all in 
the same room.

You do bring up a good point that I should move one of the 
systems elsewhere.

I just heard back from kingwin tech support and now have the 
double toaster working.  Silly me, I didn't know that what I needed
was the setting labeled JBOD in the manual.  It turns out that
JBOD is "Just a Bunch Of Disks". So, I know have a drop in mount 
for two SATA drives.  I could put in a 4TB spinny for primary storage 
of raw files, and an SSD for my catalog (to guarantee my catalog is 
always on SSD). 

Looking at this, there doesn't seem to be much disadvantage to
using usb3 versus thunderbolt.
