You know how in the later Star Trek series, when someone on an Away party wants to talk to the ship, he'll tap a little radio sewn into the shirt? Everyone around him can hear every word coming from the ship.
What if either party wants, or needs, a private dialog? Can the Away person say, "Hold on," rip the radio out of the shirt, and hold it to his ear? I won't even ask why they don't have two-way video, when we on 21st-century earth see it as the holy grail.
