Everyone in the school I went to was automatically enrolled in band in the 4th grade, and they had instruments to loan out if your parents couldn't afford to rent a better instrument (hire purchase or rent-to-own).

All the other 4th grade students got wind instruments or percussion. I got the double bass, which was quickly switched to the cello when it became obvious I had no way to transport the instrument from school to home and back for practice & lessons.

Not to mention I didn't have a ladder at home to stand on so I could reach the fingerboard. I was less than 5 ft tall then.

I know I learned the fundamentals of reading music, but I could not carry on with the cello after the first year of free lessons. I have some vague memories, but today, I'm hopelessly lost with sheet music.
