Another clever set up is a pair of vise-grip pliers, whereby the vice-grip has a (I think 8/32- 2"") screw welded to it near the gripping end. Easy to mount a ball head or camera. Somebody on Ebay sells a standard, replacement adjustment screw for the vice grips, with the proper size of threaded rod (for mounting) on the opposing end, for about $4.
