I've made a numer of clamp mounts, and if I can find one when I get
home I'll post a picture. The one that most resembles the one you
posted was made like this...

I took a small C-clamp and drilled a hole in each end of the
"backbone", and attached a metal bar (parallel to the backbone)
with the end bent 90%. I attached a ball mount to the bent part. The
only part that cost any real money was the mount. Total cost: about
$25. I thought I was just being cheap, and prior to this thread
would have been embarassed to mention this :-)

If you wanna talk real cheap, though, I made some camera stands
for photographing the LEGO church out of ... LEGO! I also used a
leveling mount all by itself as a camera stand.
