The rub comes in using an older zoom - it will ask for a focal length, but you can only enter one for the entire zoom range. This is one of the minor frustrations with using an older lens. For me, I just turn off the shake reduction when using one of my old zooms. Fortunately, I only have one that I use regularly so the issue is not quite so big.
