Here is the original for reference: http://500px.com/photo/52192954 There are noticeable jpeg artifacts around the edges of the clouds caused by recompression after I upload the image. AFAIK all sites do this and it rarely causes problems.
After some research and experimenting I found a way to get rid of those ugly artifacts: 1.) Switch to Lab color mode. 2.) Make a selection around the areas with fine detail which will cause problems after uploading. 3.) Select the a and b channels and apply blur. (I used Gaussian Blur, but others might work as well). The radius applied was a trial and error process and I re-uploaded the photo many times. Since 500px doesn't allow re-uploading, I used 1x. Here is the new version: http://1x.com/photo/371588/ I found that by blurring only the color components and not the lightness channel I can retain detail and it helps to keep the recompression process from messing up the image. P.S. I'm now testing 1x.com so if you find any annoying behavior like nag screens, popups, slow loading, etc. please let me know. -- Attila -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
