Thanks Brian, Frank, Jostein, and others who have looked. 
This approach is tedious painstaking work which chews up a lot of disc space 
and post-processing time. But I have found two big benefits, apart from the 
resulting stacked images. 

The first side benefit is that it forces me to slow down, to carefully look 
front-to-back as well as side-to-side, top-to-bottom when framing a shot. 
Second, while practicing this technique indoors with a copy-stand in lieu of a 
tripod, I found that I enjoy creating these still-life scenes.
