So why not wear full body padding?  I don't argue against the use of
helmets (I think they're a great idea), but for me it's a matter of
assessing the risk.  I ride very seldom, but when I do I love the feel of
fresh air streaming past my head.  When you consider how and where I ride,
the odds of my getting into an accident are sufficiently small that I'm
willing to forgo the protection of a helmet for the increase in comfort
and pleasure.  If I rode every day, I'd probably use a helmet, and maybe
other protection as well.  I've also had training that's taught me how to
fall properly from being thrown scary distances, so the danger there is
minimal.
