Alan,

That is probably not a bad rule to follow.  For me, living in
California, I have many more sunny days than overcast and people tend
to shy away from overcast days for photos.  One other film that I have
found handles contrast very well and is quite good with skin tones is
Fuji Reala 100.  It has good saturation and very small grain.  I have
actually used it at a wedding that was shot at high noon.  It tested
better than the Portra 160NC.  I was able to capture the blacks and
whites of the bride and groom as well.
