The biggest promoter of bloat today *IS* Google. I'm beginning to wean
myself off of it. They just shoved Google+ in my face one time too often.

As to anti-virus/security, I still like "AVG Free", despite you have to
be careful when installing the updates not let it take over and install
itself as your browser's homepage & supplant your preferred search
enging. I also rely on NoScript.

My first line of defense is a very large HOSTS file to block identified
Malware/SPAM generating sites.

There used to be a need for third party Windows virus programs, but
they have gotten so bloated these days (McAfee and Norton) that you
basically have to choose whether you want virus protection or you want
to get anything done on your computer. IMHO you no longer need
anything more than Microsoft Security Essentials (free). Google it.
Download/install it. Uninstall the other crap.

(This is coming from a guy who thinks that most Microsoft products are
crap: Microsoft Security Essentials will protect you from viruses and
spyware.)

Two antivirus programs on the same computer don't play well together.

When some programs update they have agreements with other companies and
will install a new antivirus (among other things) unless you are paying
real close attention and opt out. They'll also change your homepage and
your search engine and a bunch of other stuff if you let them.

I believe you're right, Darren. I'm getting a severe warning not to
open the first of the two links you just sent. I think MacAfee is
trying to elbow in. At this point, Norton hasn't been transferred.

To check if it is your DNS settings, see if you can open THIS link:
http://144.216.1.72/

That is the IP address for http://www.unk.edu/

If you can open it by number, but not by name, your DNS server is
down or your DNS settings are borked. Are you on Windows or Mac?

Sounds like you are VERY secure. Maybe the browser settings are for
too much security? Or you've lost the address for your DNS.
