Thanks to Paul, John, Bob and Don for the comments. And as for the backstory, Bob pretty much nailed it. The guy on the ground was actually trying to get a combo photo of his wife (at least I imagine it was his wife) and the big tree in the same shot. I just happened by at the opportune moment.
