I see it now.
He's got one of those little "hold it out at arms length & look at the
little TV screen on the back cameras" in his right hand. I didn't see it
until I knew to look for it.

And as for the backstory, Bob pretty much nailed it. The guy on the
ground was actually trying to get a combo photo of his wife (at least
I imagine it was his wife) and the big tree in the same shot. I just
happened by at the opportune moment.
