As a matter of fact, it is on the chair arm next to me as I type, along with the individual photos. All my PDMLers' books are next to each other on the shelves. The particular shot I remembered is the one of the 'rémouleur' (knife sharpener) looking as though he is driving a fork lift. Louis XIV mentions him in his 'Manière de montrer les jardins de Versailles', but calls him 'l'Esguiseur', a word which is not in my dictionary and gets very few hits on Google, all referring to Louis XIV, but I guess it has come to contemporary French as 'aiguiseur', meaning a grindstone. You will remember he is opposite the Venus accroupie on the north steps. She is in your book too. Your pictures have the lovely patina of age. I wish I had had a chance to see Les Halles in Paris properly before they knocked them down. I think they were still there the first time I went as an adult, but pretty soon disappeared to be replaced by the present monstrosity. >> >> That photo is for some non-PDML friends who made fun of me for planning a > picnic in Versailles on Christmas Day.
