I think it's authentic.
I've seen somwhere how he makes his images, and it includes a small-sensor camera; a sort of hacked compact. That gives him more DOF. In addition he use advanced stacking techniques; to the point I suspect him to be a bored astrophotographer looking for something to do under the snowing clouds.
