If "modern democratic monarch" isn't an oxymoron, then nothing can be. The very concept of an hereditary monachy is offensive to the equality of all people, regardless of race, religion, gender, nationality and "status" of birth. The best that can be said for "the Queen Mum" (what a strange phrase, and so terribly British) is that she was not born a "Windsor" (a name created to disguise a German line of rulers).
