Lithiums are pretty good. You can put them away and wait for your original set to die, if you want to, then charge them up and put them into service. Actually, you don't really have to think about it. If you want to "top off" the charge occasionally, you can do that, too. Much more convenient than NiCd batteries.
NiMh batteries are equally as convenient.
