I didn't ask about basic plates, but I assume they wouldn't be producing those also. Kirk said it was because of the low anticipated volume of requests. But this might change.
i recently purchased a Mestos K-5 (non-L, non-grip) plate from eBay seller madforcameracom; it arrived from S. Korea within the stated time-frame; it fits very well, and i've seen reports it fits K-3 as well
same seller has Mestos plates, L and non-L, for use with grip but i don't know whether they'll work with K-3 grip
