Taka,

Email lists come in different flavours. There are:

1. Unmoderated.
2. Slightly moderated.
3. Very moderated.
4. Highly moderated.
5. And then there's the Powerlist, but that's another story.

I belong to three lists. One is so well moderated that you can't even
post stuff for sale with a 'FS' at the front of the subject line. There
is an army of listmoms and they'll unsubscribe you if you even think of
an off-topic word in your post. It's a very active list.

Another is so-so. There is one list moderator and he vets the posts (only
20 or so a day, admittedly). But he's not totally strict, only moderating
when it's obvious things have run there course. He removes excessive
signatures with advertising, including mine (that follows this email -
and he's a Mac man too!) so it's a tidy list. But fun.

Then there's the PDML. It has a great atmosphere. As Graywolf has written
(very well, too) it can be a little brash here from time to time, but
that is the nature of a very slightly moderated list. Doug Brewer walks
very softly, but boy he carroes a big stick. Hardly anybody gets
unsubbed, but it happens.

Now, I don't mean to be patronising, and forgive me if I come across that
way, but:

with a list like this, it requires a little more work on behalf of the
subscriber. What you have to do is set up a filtering system on your
email application. If you don't like to read a thread, what you do is set
it to go straight into your deleted folder. Most call this a 'kill file'.
This way, amazingly, your eyes are not molested by the spurious
blitherings of Off-Topic Ranting. Yes, it's a free world my friend, and
with some things there is a price to pay. With this list, it's a very
free exchange of information and ideas, usually with a Pentax-related
issue <g>, but to get that uncensored, unmodified free excahnge of ideas,
you have to be prepared to wade through stuff you aren't the slightest
bit interested in.

Hey, I get the digest version and *I* have to scroll through Gigabytes of
irrelevant text - sometimes - but actually quite rarely.

Without wanting to sound harsh - use the delete button, or subscribe in
digest mode, or unsubscribe. But if you do hang around, and I would
highly recommend it, be prepared for some interesting debate and exchange
on Pentax, photography, and.....anything!

Best,

Cotty
