I'm generally not a fan of Microsoft products, but this one is free and actually works very well: Microsoft Security Essentials http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download
It is not only virus protection, but also protects you from spyware (like Malwarebytes does, which is another excellent product but costs $29 to turn on the "real time" protection). It also does not bog down your system as Symantec/Norton/MacAfee do.
