I mentioned here before that I have acquired a Mac Mini that's supposed to be a little
home recording studio. I'm getting ready to un-box it and set it up, and I already know
I'm going to have to connect it to the internet for software authentication. (I've been
reading the manual ... gives a whole new meaning to "fine print".)

i assume you mean the brief little document that came with the computer; if so you might find the online version more readable:

So, before I take the plunge & plug it in, I'd like suggestions for anti-virus
software for the Mac.

i have heard good things about ClamXav; installed it once years ago, but have not used it recently

the only things i have to add to Bruce's suggestions are

1) keep your OS up-to-date (esp. after the "go to fail" debacle)

2) use Little Snitch (sort of a reverse firewall), which will help you allow the authentications your software may require, but monitor (and optionally disable) other attempts by software to "phone home"; Little Snitch takes some attention and some understanding of how computers make network connections

3) don't install Flash, and use Adobe Reader only when Preview can't handle a PDF (if you need Flash, install Chrome, which includes a sandboxed version)
