Obviously, you are missing your flash working as a slave. :-) On a serious note, - I have only one thought: what do you have it activated by? TTL flash or PTTL one? I don't know how it is done, but it is designed not to go off with the PTTL's pre-flash. I wonder if your problem may somehow be related to this, e.g. if your "main" unit doesn't do the preflash. And, I assume you've made sure it sees the "master's" flash very well. Rather than that, - your flash might just have rebelled against slavery. (Especially after your calling it "a dumb".)
