I just got a new K-30 and I was wondering if there is any way to force
the built-in AF Assist lamp to function when I want it to? Several
times, while trying to take photos in very low light, the AF Assist lamp
SHOULD have turned on, but it didn't. It almost seems to activate at
random when I'm in a dim environment. Any suggestions?

Should I just duct tape an LED flashlight to my camera? :)

Use gaffer's tape. It doesn't leave as much residue.

Looking through the K-30 manual, it seems that the AF Assist lamp is
only available in AF.S and that it turns on "as necessary". I didn't
find anything in the manual to tell me how the camera determines when
"necessary" exists.

Pg 100 - "The AF assist light turns on as necessary."

PG 101 - "If you do not want to use the AF assist light in AF.S mode, you
can turn it off by clearing the check box for [AF Assist Light] in [AF
Settings] of the [Rec. Mode 2] menu."

So, it's not entirely "at random", but there doesn't seem to be any user
control other than to turn the function on/off.
