Thanks for that nice info on paintbrush... sure looks like Ken's is
the variety you mentioned, and quite sure my stuff from the 80's is
as well.. photo'ed in the capitol reef and canyonlands... they are so lovely.
well, Ken notes a different species, and my id was tentative; here's some more
on his species - don't be put off by the apparent differences, they vary a lot
by season, location and hybridization

i've seen "desert" castilleja (of one species or another) in the Needles
(Canyonlands) and near Colorado National Monument, probably other spots, but
i've never been to Capitol Reef nor Escalante
