Incidentally, I'd never noticed that song (i.e. had not heard or had 
not paid attention to the lyrics) of Sting until your reference.

... It's interesting to read _today_ what the critic (Jim White, Q magazine) 
wrote some 20 years ago about this song on the "Fields of Gold" (1994) album:

"there's the political commentary rendered obsolete by the historical
turn of events ('Russians')."
I hope that statement remains valid today, 20 years later, and beyond.
