I'm not sure what type of gloves they are. Hockey gloves are more heavily padded. Maybe they're lacrosse gloves? I'll ask next time I see a polo buddy.
As for the bars, I'm with you, drop bars rule. But for polo one must be fairly upright for leverage-of-the-mallet and all that stuff. The narrow bars are quite necessary in those close quarters. The serious polo guys and gals (like Shane on the right) have purpose-built bikes and they tend to be very compact with small wheels (650c) for maneuverability. It's really an exciting sport.
