That gels with the response from my ISP, who also indicated the problem was a 
time-out in running
the PHP script.  Doesn't explain those pages which did not include any PHP, of 
course!

May have found a solution to the constant "server not found" issues I've been 
experiencing.

Googled "firefox timeout" and once I was finally able to get the page to load, 
found a suggestion to
change "dom.max_script_run_time". Default is
10 seconds.

I changed it to 20 seconds & haven't had a "server not found error"
since then.
