No, Ann, my wife insists on her month in Maui every winter, so another
trip to Alaska is not in the cards. We are thinking of Japan in the
spring, however.
We went to Alaska 20 years ago. Our trip lasted 16 days, and we had
15 airplane flights (including 4 that took off and landed on water), 4
train trips, 3 boat trips, 3 bus tours, two minivan tours, and about
900 miles by rental car.
We were be there for the summer solstice. Not only is that an
interesting time of year there, because of the "midnight sun," but
they have a lot of festivals for the solstice week. Alaskans love to
party. The excessive amount of daylight is very energizing, and I was
amazed at how much we were able to do in a day.
Although we spent four nights in Denali, Katmai National Park was
by far our favorite part of the trip. You reach it by flying to King
Salmon, then taking a float plane that takes off in the river and
lands in Neknak lake. The area is famous for fishing, with lots of
trout and salmon, but the major attraction is the grizzlies,
especially during the salmon run. In Denali National Park, you see
the bears at a distance, usually from a bus. In Katmai, your biggest
concern is making enough noise so you won't get too close to the
bears. <G> We also took an all day trip to the Valley of 10,000
Smokes, a 22 mile valley covered with ash from a volcano that exploded
in 1912 with a force 10 times that of Mt. St. Helens.
Alaska is great, but "Maui no ka oi." <G>
