What I miss from such explanations is the importance of culture as a
backdrop to understand art. This one take a step i that direction when
mentioning that one might start to understand the visual language of the
particular artist after seeing twenty or so works.
My favourite personal example of cultural (or historical) knowledge is
"Guernica" by Picasso. I saw that image first time as a teenager, before I'd
heard anything of the Spanish Civil War. It didn't make much sense until I
looked up the title in an encyclopedia.
For figurative art I suspect icons are wasted on the agnostic for the same
reason. :-)
