I much prefer the 2nd (tighter) crop.

The broader view adds context. Maybe. I am not sure what the context is. Are
they at school? On a field trip waiting to go in someplace famous? Waiting for
the school bus? Waiting in line for a vacant PortaPotty? No clues there for
anyone who was not there at the time, and so the “context” is just extra
surrounding noise. Even with the caption, I still am left in the dark. Is the
Paul Revere school the school Revere went to? Did he teach there? Stable his
horse there? Or is it just another of those random landmarks and institutions
named in his memory?

In the tighter crop, you have three main stories going on plus a few more. The
interaction among the three girls at the head of the line. The purple dress
girl toward the back who is the only one aware of your presence. And the
shoving match among the red-head and two others in the center of the line. The
sidewalks lead the eye to the first two “stories”, the line of kids is itself a
pointer to the middle group (and the several other individual scenarios being
played out).

I like it a lot. I like that the simple line of kids reveals so many different
exchanges among the subjects. Look from a distance and you have a static image.
Look more closely and it is like magic! You have enough material there for a
whole book of short stories.

BTW: for some reason I was thinking that your road trip would involve travel in
the midwest. I saw your subject line and my first thought was: “Which crop do I
prefer? She’s going to display a corn field vs. wheat field…” It has been a
long day, I’ve been working too hard.
