I received an e-mail from the inventor of this bike. While I’m not up to speed
on bikes — pun intended — I found it interesting. He is of course hoping to get
publicity in the Times to help his kickstarter campaign. That’s a non-starter,
but I like the bike. I tried sending his email but it never appeared. Probably
had some rich text in there. But here’s a link to the page that explains his
bike.

interesting, and i appreciate your sharing this; the Kickstarter page seems oversold to me; the Gates belt-drive, along with Rohloff or Alfine hubs, are already well-proven and cover most of the "benefits" cited with a lot more flexibility and a lower cost; e.g.:

there is also another system which puts the gearbox in the bottom bracket (like the above-linked project) but like Alfine and Rohloff allows use of whatever chain or belt you like

in the process of becoming somewhat established, these newfangled systems have also shown how well-sorted the traditional bicycle drivetrain really is (as it continues to evolve); i would love to try a Gates/Alfine bike, but i am pretty content with traditional gears
