A small NZ bike manufacturer used a Rohloff hub on a carbon-fibre downhill race 
bike about 10 years ago.  He mounted the gearbox in the frame to keep the 
centre of gravity under control as they're quite heavy.  It also freed him from 
some major constraints in the suspension design which is a major reason why the 
bike was so good.

Sadly the guy who built it was better at engineering than he was at business 
and he ended up going bust, even after the publicity he got from a rider 
winning a world cup race on it.
