Pretty much no motor vehicles on the island.

1. Reachable by passenger ferry or by air. No car ferries.
2.There is one ambulance and one (?) fire truck.
3. There are electric carts on the golf course, and those with mobility issues
can use electric-powered chairs.
4. A few exemptions for gas-powered lawn mowers and chain saws.
5. No motor scooters, no motor cycles. The general rule is just walking,
bicycling, or horse power.
6. Residents garage their cars/trucks off the island.

However,

In the winter, that portion of Lake Huron freezes over. The ferries stop
running. At that point the residents and visitors resort to snow mobiles as the
primary mode of transportation (within the island and to reach the mainland).
As well as XC skiis, snowshoes, etc.

Permanent population of 500-600. A big influx of semi-permanant service workers
during the summer. One doctor, two veterinarians, a police force of 6-8. A K-12
school with a total of about 100 students. Six in last year's graduating class
(one guy, five girls).

Many day visitors, lots of B&B's, inns, and a ;handful of hotels. I was told
that the "visitor" population can reach about 25,000 on a summer day (including
overnighters and day visitors). It is about 300-500 on a good day in the winter.

Interesting place! Many shops selling tourist kitsch and T-shirts, but also
fine art shops, jewelry stores etc. Several good restaurants, many bars.

It is approximately a 7 mile ride to circumnavigate the island on the costal
highway.
